LO4: Evaluation

The brief has asked me to produce a range of photographs based on the theme of identities. So I decided to study the identity of Salik Nawaz by asking I'm about his interests and reaching a conclusion that he is really interested in sports, especially basketball. I took inspiration from sports photographers in order to gain motivation/ an idea of what I could produce for this piece.

Andrew D. Bernstein gave me quite a lot of inspiration for my shoot. I think the main reason why I enjoyed viewing his work was due to the fact that he could capture the most perfect moment of in motion action where that athlete is preforming a move or a play during a basketball game. When it came to my shoot I made sure I was equipped with the Canon 650D camera, I changed the shutter speed to sports mode which allowed me to take a large range of in motion pictures capturing the motion of each move my mode made within the shoot. I also made sure I captured some photographic features such as centre of interest and composition, whilst maintaining the genre style of still life in order to create a sense of verisimilitude for the viewers. The reason why this project has ,managed to stick to the brief correctly is due to the fact that I have looked into my models personal interests that help create his identity and included them within the shoot in order to also show the audience how passionate he feels towards the sport of basketball as part of his identity.

My intenstions within this shoot were to capture the emotion of Salik in different whys through editing my photographs, this is becauseI believe that I could be able to make the target audience feel different kinds of emotions and feeling when looking at the photographs. I believe that the target audience would understand the meaning straight away when they viewed my pictures by denoting my model playing basketball and enjoying himself. My belifs was that they would connote how much he loves basketball and would feel that love of basketball within each individual photograph. However my intensions were to change the moods sometimes by editing the colours of the environment in some type of way.

Looking at my portfolio of the finished product from my shoot I have come to an understanding on why I had chosen these pictures. Personally I believe the reason why I have used this photographs is due to the fact that each individual picture gives the viewer a certain feeling either based on the colours used or the effect of saturation or change of HUE within the picture. This is also due to the fact that I wanted the audience to be able to express some sort of emotion when looking at my photographs either through colour connotations or environmental connotations.

I believe as the photographer it is my responsibility to give life to my photography, and for my the best way to show that life was through the expression of colours and motion captured pictures.

The tools i mainly focused on using whilst on Photoshop were: select took, magic wand, magic eraser, layers, colour layer, paint brush, saturation, HUE, contrast and black & white. These are quite simple tools to use, but the way in which I used them helped compliment my pictures for my portfolio in quite a unique way. I believe when it came to editing my pictures on Photoshop, each one got better with experience. This was primarily due to the fact that quite a lot of the things I have done on Photoshop you have to learn on the spot, which I felt was very exciting for an inspiring when trying to tap into creative genius.

I feel like I could've took my shoot at various locations to meet the brief more but I am still pleased with the outcome of my shoot. thinking back to my shoot now, I believe a photographic technique I could've used to improve my photo would be the idea of leading lines, this to help focus a centre of interest within my pictures. I believe I could further develop my skills on Photoshop in order to produce high grade and good quality photographs further along the line, this can be done through practice within my own free time in order to get better familiar with the tolls and different settings and features of Photoshop.

LO3 Unedited images

Here are the unedited images the photographs I have taken using the sports photography feature on the camera to capture in motion images of my model.I also tried using the manual settings on the camera but I believe that the fast shutter speed on the sports photography feature makes for a better picture.

I believe that using the sports photography feature on the camera to capture a range of moving pictures was a creative means of producing a sports photography scene, this is because you're able to see the transition from picture to picture giving you the effect as if you were there in during that time at that exact moment.

With my photographs tken you can see that I have used a high depth of field due to the fact that my models actions will always gain the attention of the viewer first no matter what. I made him the centre of interst so your eyes are automatically drawn into him when you look upon my photograph. Due to my shoot being outside, I have used only natural light for my shoot. I personally believe that this compliments my model more rather than having a studio shoot due to the fact that we are seeing how he looks under natural light which makes the photogrph have more of a natural feel to it.

What I tried to do when taking these photographs was to try and capture the emotion of the models facial expressions whilst he plays basketball, I did this because I wanted to give the audience an idea of how this certain sport makes the individual feel in terms of the excitement he gets when playing basketball.

My photograhy fits into my brief because I am looking into the identity of Salik and by doing that I have come to find out he loves basketball with a passion, so what I have tried to do is show the audience how much Salik loves basketball by just giving them an idea through his interaction with a basketball.

Editing will enchance the meaning behind my photos by allowing me to use different effects which should be able to change the nature of the photo. This means I will be able to change the mood of photo which will have an affect on how the audience view my photogrphy. I believe this will add diversity wthin my photography an allow me to show my target audience all the emotions within each photograph.

LO2 Treatment

Brief
I have been asked by my client to take a series of photographs that relate to the topic of identities for my brief.

Concept Idea
I have thought about producing a final piece based on my identity, I have thought about taking a series of photographs of things that make me me. I will be taking a portrait picture of myself at a close up camera shot type with a shallow depth of field, and within this picture I will be using a series of photographs of things/people within my life that connote my identity. I was thinking the overall projection of this could be presented within my eyes, the reason in which I have decided to do it like this is because it gives the viewers an effect as if they're looking straight through me into my life.

Target Audience
In terms of my target audience I believe that final piece will attract will be people from the ages of 16 to 26, this is because roughly people within this age range will know about the life as a student, with managing that and a social and athletic life in the background.

Realistically the people that would come and see my exhibit would be people within the ABC1 category of the demographic scale, this is because these people are more likely to visit art exhibits.

Key Milestones

1. I will be deciding to get my planning done during this lesson but currently I have a brief idea on what I will be producing already

2. In terms of taking the photographs I am going to have to take my pictures outside some tim next week probably the wednesday, so I can take the pictures because the weather looks good on the forecast.

3. I am looking into doing my editing as soon as I finish getting done with my photographs, this is because it will save time on wot delta as much.

4. I think the launch date will be next week friday, during my photography class so I can get the teachers advice on some features and try to improve and from there launch it.

Equipment and props

Referring to my initial idea I believe that I am going to be doing a sports related shoot. I will need for my shoot: A basketball and a Canon DSLR camera, this is because I am able to capture in motion photographic pictures with this feature of the camera. Air Jordan flight 1's and a tracksuit for the costume my model will be wearing.

LO2: Legal And Ethical

Copyright ensures the protection of a person/companies individual product, this protect their work from being stolen by other individuals and gives them full coverage over the thing which they're getting copyright protection over. Anyone who breaks this copyright law will be prosecuted and will have to pay the individual/company for using their product.

Speaking on my photography unit, I will not be using images from any other photographer so I will not need to gain an permission from them, because all my work will be originally created by me. How ever, if I was to use someone else's images within my editing stages of my shoot I would need top gain their permission first by giving them release and consent forms before I can actually use their image. This is done to ensure my protection when borrowing the images from any individual photographer or an companies, therefore I will not be prosecuted for using any of their materials.

When taking pictures on public land I must be sure that I am allowed to take photographs, this is because sometimes certain public places prohibit the idea of letting people take photographs on their land, unless they have their permission first. For my shoot it will be fine due to the fact that I am a UTC Sheffield student who is using their property for my shoot, so I will not need to contact anyone in terms of being allowed to use the land.

The model I have for my photograph is Salik Nawas, he has given me his permission to let me take pictures of him for my shoot. My shoot is in a public place, right on the UTC Sheffield premises, so I will not need permission when taking my shoot, due to the fact that I am a student at the college.

Representation is a major when taking my pictures, this is due to the fact that you do not want your images to have a negative affect on the audience you're trying to attract. This would compromise your shoot and cause major problems within the pre-production process of the shoot. It is important to make sure you have suitable images that cause no negative representations.

I am going to ensure that I do not misrepresent my model, I do not intend to ruin his reputation or life through my shoot because that can be very stressful for the model himself.
