LO1: Duncan Philpott

Genre

Duncan Philpott is an action photographer who specialises in sport photography. Much of his work consists of in action photographs which contain images of people doing various stunts and tricks. Primarily he focuses on biking as a sport due to the various amounts of photos that can be taken.

The thing that drew Duncan Philpott in the most when it came to doing photography full time was due to the fact that he enjoyed doing it. While Duncan Philpott was pursuing his new career he was granted some new experiences such as traveling around the world to take photographs for different companies. Sometimes the clients allow him to showcase his personality through his photography which he believes brings him closer to his work.

The downside of being an action photographer were quite high in comparison to the benefits. One of the main disadvantages Duncan Philpott had encountered while pursuing photography as a career were things such as being out of work for a long time whilst you wait for jobs to come through, this could be quite a bother for Duncan because he wouldn't be able to enjoy the luxuries of life due to constantly chasing down work.

Purpose/ Photographic rules

The purpose of Duncan Philpotts photography is to capture the in motion stunts preformed by mountain bikers, this givs the viewers more of insight into the talent and beatuy in mountain biking. As you can see below here are a few pictures of Duncans sports photography, I have noticed that he uses a high depth of field in order to give the viewers more of a visual feel to the photograph, making the feel as if they were visually there within that moment of time in the picture.

Also I have noticed that the centre of interest whithin these two photographs are aimed at the athlete himself, this is done in order to instantaniously draw viewers eyes into the this image. Also due to the stunt being preformed within this photograph spectacle is created and within the photograph which leaves the audience wanting more.

Meaning

These photographs give the audience a sense of excitment which leves them wanting to see more. The reason why I think this is due to the fact that when I look at these photographs personally I feel as if I want to know what happens next. This personally is why I am drawn in so much to Duncans style of sports photography.
